The success of manufacturing firms depends on their ability to identify the needs of customers and to quickly create products that meet these needs and can be produced at low cost.
Product development is the set of activities beginning with the perception of a market opportunity and ending in the production, sale and delivery of a product.
Mostly, the perspective of the investors in a for-profit enterprise of the successful product development results is solely in products that can be produced and sold profitability.
The performance of a product development effort may be mentioned as below:
1. The product quality,
Is it satisfy the customer need? Is it reliable?
2. Product cost of manufacturing.
How much profit accrues to the firm?
3. Development time.
More time of development effort means more cost.
The opportunity can be lost as the time goes by.
4. Development cost.
It is a part of the investment required to achieve the profits.
5. Development capability.
It is an asset of the firm can use to develop products more effectively and
economically in the future.
The three functions are almost always central to a product development project,
1. Marketing function.
2. Design function.
3. Manufacturing function.
